How to Stitch the Basketweave Pattern

1. Understand the Direction

• Basketweave follows a diagonal pattern. Stitches on one diagonal row go from the upper right to the lower left (downward slant), while stitches on the next diagonal row go from the lower left to the upper right (upward slant).

• Think of your canvas as having “stair steps” that guide your stitching. Vertically overlapped intersections are the “poles” and horizontally overlapped intersections are the “stairs”.

2. Start in the Right Place

• It’s best to start in the middle of a large area, not at the edge, to help maintain even tension.

• Begin with your needle coming up through the canvas from the back.

3. Follow the Stair-Step Pattern

• Move diagonally across the canvas, covering each intersection of the mesh with a stitch that travels from Arizona the Maine (bottom left to top right of the intersection). 

• Work moving diagonal down the canvas covering the “poles” intersections, or traveling up the canvas diagonally on the “step” intersections.

• Your stitches should begin to look as though they are interlocking on the front of the canvas. 

4. Keep Your Stitches Even

• The back of your canvas should show a woven pattern, similar to a basket—hence the name!

• Avoid pulling the thread too tightly, as this can distort the canvas.
